CDT Day 151 (CO – Mon. Pass to L. City/Creede)

A Different Side of the ‘Rado

  • CDT Miles: 1,028.4-996 (32.4)
  • Total Hiked: 2,607.1 miles
  • Elevation Range: 9,340-11,775

Several things came together today to allow for more than anticipated mileage. The main factor was less ascent. Conversely, there was more descent and I ended up down in the 9,000-10,000 feet elevation range. That helped too. Seems everything is easier when not up around 12,000. Had some nice trail (and roads even), perfect weather, and generally more forest tunnel. All combined to make a pretty cruisy day.

I pulled the old 6:22am to 6:22 pm shift today. From my camp at the junction to Baldy Lake (I’d gone 0.3 miles off trail and downhill to get water and eat dinner by the lake last night), I had a climb to my highest point for the day. To my left, there was a sea of clouds below and out, but it was clear overtop me and off to the right .

I had a lovely break atop one of the climbs. Dried out my tent and ground cover (this has become a regular thing with it being frosty every night now) and had a giant-sized cookie and an iced coffee. I even had a little Hershey’s/International Delight coffee creamer to add. Such a treat. Tomorrow’s is Carmel machiato flavored. Whoa, right!?

More meadows and more pretty Aspens. More leaves on the ground too, but I like getting to see the whole process. Even the Aspens that are turning brown or that are leafless now, it’s all quite the amazing thing. I just love Fall.

Around 3:30pn, things really opened up to a wide valley. Sort of stayed along the edge of it, but it has a whole different feel than what Colorado has offered thus far. Felt almost Wyoming basin-like

The 1,000 mile marker didn’t mean too much for me other than it meant I have less than 200 miles to go of my stretch! I celebrated with a gummy worm.

A little after 5pm, I started listening to an album I felt would fit the mood. Had to finish it before camp and it worked out perfectly to bring me to an awesome spot.

Haven’t gone for the ole time lapse sunset tent setup in a while, so here we go…
